Welcome to RELS 204

We will soon be together for Faith Communities. In an effort to help me get to know you and learn how to best facilitate this blog, please tell others briefly where you are from and then post something to the blog that answers one of the following two questions:

* What is something really important that happened to me this summer?
* What service have I done that has been meaningful in my life?

I look forward to hearing from each of you! Use the "comment" feature below to post your introduction!

This summer I discovered Japanese eggplant! On a more serious note, I went to the memorial celebration of a famous educator and friend, Carl Pfeifer, who died in July. He has made his mark in history and was truly a man of service.

This summer I was invited to be on the Northeast Iowa Community College's Institutinal Review Board. I am excited because I will ultimately be able to help fellow students further enhance their education.

The most important thing that happened to me this summer occurred the week before school began. I came back to Clarke a week early to attend the marching band camps at the middle school and high school I will be student teaching at in the fall. To step foot in a real band again felt amazingly awesome. These band rooms where learning, music making, and community building takes place reassured me that music education was the one and only major for me. I have always "lived" in the band room, and I could not imagine spending my life anywhere else.

I was involved in Into the Streets last year. Doing that service was meaningful because it was a good chance to get out and help the Dubuque community and represent Clarke in a positive way. It showed me how much some organizations rely on volunteers to be able to function.

Over the summer I helped out at the local fire department by filing papers and keeping the office in order for them. It made me realize how much such a little act like that can help out so much. Also it made me realize that helping someone out with the little things in life can make such a big difference.

One thing that I did over the summer that was important to me was I went to Texas on a roadtrip with my grandma to visit my god-daughter/cousin Morena. She is going to be two in Novemeber and I never get to see her so it was very important to me to get to spend some time with her. I also was happy to get to spend some quality time with my grandma while driving the 11 hours to get there. She told me a lot about her life before she was a grandma and I will never forget that time we spent together.

This summer I didn't get to do many things besides work. When I did have free time I would go and help my Aunt with her new born son, Andrew, and I would also go and help my mom get her house ready to be sold. It was a lot of hard work but while going through all of the old toys, movies, clothes and pictures brought back a lot of good memories from my childhood that I had almost forgotten.

This summer I learned how important family is; my Grandma ended up in the hospital and then a week later my Grandpa found out he had a cancerous tumor. This summer I spend my days taking care of my little cousin so my aunts and uncles could help out grandma and grandpa. Everyone had their part to do and we did our part to help each other. It was a bad situation but it brought us even closer!

During the summer I worked and took a CNA class. The clinicals during my class impacted me because whenever we would go the residents would be glad to see us. It just really reminded me that we need to respect and remember the older generations.

This summer, back home in the Twin Cities, I helped as an education assistant in a special needs summer school program. It was very meaningful for me because I witnessed great love coming from the students and I had a wonderful time interacting with them.

I would say that something really important that happened to me this summer was the chance to meet some real Indians in panama, called Para Ná Verú also known as Emberá. And I think that the service that I did was that we (convention of engineers) brought some things for their needs and they gave us some of their food that it was traditional for them. I think that it was a good learning experience.

If you wan to know more information about these indigenous people you could go to this website http://www.nativeplanet.org/indigenous/embera/
and to see pictures of them doing their tribe dance at http://www.hostelworld.com/images/tours/10079_252_1.jpg
